This town acted as a vigilant tower with a defensive character during the 10th and 11th centuries, while the muslim occupied the south of Spain. The history of Torre del Mar dates back to the Phoenician, Roman, and even before this time...the carthaginians. This is confirmed by the phoenican era remains found in the surrounding coastal areas. It is a perfect natural port. Whatever it may look like, Torre del Mar was used as a port town in the 10th century, when the city was called Miraya Ballis.
During the 15th century, Torre del Mar was made up of the Castle and everything in it´s surroundings grew. It was a city with a military demeanor dedicated to the defense of the invasions and attacks by foreigners and pirates. During the 18th century it was witness to the attacks by hispano-french attacks against the anglo-dutch. A battle which causes the fortress walls from the muslim era to suffer a tremendous change to better repel the attacks coming from sea.
In the 19th century, Torre del Mar started taking the shape it has today. It was made up of 4 quarters...Barrio de la Parroquia, Barrio de la Vina, Casas Nuevas and Barrio del Castillo.
In the end of the 19th century and beginings of the 20th century Torre del Mar was doted with a train station and roads, which obviously facilitated the development of this town, one that since the 20th century has had tourism as it´s main objective. In the beginings of the 20th century a few spas were built with the intentions of bringing in tourism. This however did not begin to occur until the 1960´s when tourism started to change the look of this town, and began to grow in an important way. Bigger avenues, big buildings and a beach promenade as well as tourist infrastructures like hotels to accommodate the growing tourim. |
